Student: Safety and Health Assistant

The Space Dynamics Laboratory is seeking a motivated student to work as a safety and health assistant. Responsibilities will include coordinating the chemical safety data sheet (SDS) inventory and updating and maintaining this database, periodic calibration of oxygen monitoring systems, and checking AEDs, crane-use logs, and other equipment under the purview of the Safety office. Additional responsibilities will include performing sampling for chemical and physical hazards, writing reports, logging in and tracking hazardous waste, and assisting with maintaining the Emergency Response program, drills, and personnel training. Work may also include providing health and safety training for employees. The selected candidate will also serve in a reserve role for emergency response, during and after regular work hours.

Employment planned to begin as soon as feasible.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be a student currently enrolled in the USU Industrial Hygiene program
  • Must be able to commit to 40 hours a week during the summer and remain working for 20 hours a week during the school year between 8 to 5 pm on weekdays
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be willing to build positive relationships throughout the organization to enhance the safety and health culture
  • Must be observant and willing to correct unsafe behavior
  • Strong computer skills and a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Must be a US citizen, lawful permanent resident of the US, or other US person

Preferred Qualifications:
  • HAZWOPER certification is a plus
