The Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL), a University Affiliated Research Center, has been developing innovative technologies and solutions for cutting-edge DoD and intelligence programs for over six decades. Our expertise is in space and airborne IR, VIS, UV, and RF sensors, small satellite technologies, test and calibration, cybersecurity, data visualization and assurance, and ground stations.

The Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) materials process group is seeking an entry-level analytical chemist to support a variety of trace chemical analysis tasks for verification of aerospace flight hardware cleanliness levels. SDL's contamination analysis laboratory capabilities include gravimetric, infrared, and GCMS analysis of nonvolatile residues or outgassing byproducts, microscopic analysis of particulate contamination levels, and ASTM E595 outgassing analyses to screen materials per NASA low outgassing standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manages, operates, troubleshoots, and repairs chemical analysis instrumentation
  • Prepares and manages trace chemical analysis sampling kits
  • Performs data analysis and create documentation associated with cleanliness certifications per IEST-STD-CC1246
  • Tracks equipment usage, incoming samples, and materials
  • Develops and maintains documentation related to the SDL chemical analysis process
  • Supports thermal vacuum chamber monitoring and space environment testing
  • Helps develop, validate, and perform special material processes, such as precision cleaning of sensitive parts, chemical etching to promote bond adhesion or reduce surface defects, application of specialty coatings, and other surface preparations

Required Qualifications:
  • BS in Chemistry or related laboratory field
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience operating quantitative chemical analysis instrumentation
  • Must be a US citizen and be able to obtain US government security clearance
