DESCRIPTION

Must work a minimum of 18 hours a week Monday - Friday
The department will accept up to the first 250 qualified applications.

This is a part-time entry-level work-training program for those interested in a fire service career. A fire cadet performs support functions primarily centered on fire training, fire prevention, and emergency management. This position will be introduced to a wide variety of fire service experiences.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES

The following duties are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification; it is only a representative summary of some of the essential duties and responsibilities.
  • hazardous material inspection program support
  • fire prevention outreach and engagement
  • fire suppression equipment support
  • interdepartmental deliveries, and administrative support
Knowledge & Education
  • Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent
Experience
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Candidates must possess a valid Class C California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability.
  • Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent Resident Alien meeting the
    requirements of Government Code Section 1031 (A) and 1031.5.
Possession of:

In order to qualify for this position candidates must posses a

  • Current CPR certification at the "professional rescuer" or "healthcare provider" level.
And one of the following:
  • Successful completion of a California State Fire Marshal Accredited Firefighter I Academy or California State Firefighter 1 certificate, with
  • Valid California State or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician License
Or
  • Possession of a valid Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic Certificate.

Or
  • Current or former Fire Explorer, any department (Proof must be provided in writing by the fire department or explore advisor on department letterhead), with
  • Valid California State or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician License

The closing date may also be extended, or the job may be re-posted if an insufficient number of applications is received during the initial posting period.

Candidates that successfully pass the screening process and are deemed to possess the most desirable qualifications may be invited to a written exam tentatively scheduled for Thursday, May 16, 2024. Candidates who pass the written exam will be invited to the in-person oral interviews tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, May 29, 2024. The top scoring candidates from the oral interview will be placed on an eligibility list from which the department may hire.

The successful candidate will be required to undergo a reference / background check including livescan and pass a pre-employment medical examination (which will include a drug/alcohol screening).

The Organization

The City of Corona is a General Law city operating under a Council-Manager form of government. Policymaking and legislative authority is vested in the City Council, consisting of a Mayor and four Council Members. Members of the City Council are elected by District to a four-year term. The Mayor is selected by the Council and serves as the presiding officer for one year.

The City is organized into the following departments/organizational units: Community Services, City Manager's Office, Economic Development, Finance, Fire, Human Resources, Information Technology, Legal and Risk Management, Police, Planning & Development, Public Works and Utilities. Oversight of these departments is divided between the City Manager and two Assistant City Managers.

The City's total operating budget for Fiscal Year 2024 is $369.9 million with a General Fund operating budget of $194.5 million. Corona enjoys a workforce of 860 dedicated employees who provide high quality services to its residents and visitors each day.
