Job Summary

Utilizes the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide safe, therapeutic care. Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary and nursing teams; carries out established nursing procedures and performs related duties as required; performs nursing care for patients with more complex needs with assistance and supervision. Assists with the management of patient care administered by other members of the nursing team.

Department Description

The Cardiovascular / Thoracic / Transplant Unit (6L), is a 27 -bed inpatient unit. It is primarily a telemetry / step-down, acuity adaptable unit that also provides continuous pulse oximetry. The unit serves the cardiology, cardiothoracic and vascular patient population. Patients admitted to this unit are usually admitted under the Cardiology, Vascular Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery (including the Heart & Lung Transplant) and Thoracic Surgery Services.

A wide range of medical disorders are represented including congestive heart failure, pulmonary hypertension (raised blood pressure in blood vessels supplying the lungs), myocardial infarction (type of heart attack) and arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythm).

The staff on this unit provide an individualized approach to patient care, emphasizing patient and family education regarding lifestyle changes, diet modifications, and medications.

This is a fast-paced unit involving multiple diagnostic tests & procedures, in addition to a moderately high number of discharges and admissions per day. Because of this, teamwork is crucial to daily operations, and is greatly promoted amongst the staff and other members of the health care team. Among the nurses and physicians, other members of the patient care team include professionals in the areas of social work, pharmacy, dietary, physical therapy (PT), respiratory therapy (RT), speech therapy, occupational therapy, and pastoral care.

Required Qualifications

• A minimum of two (2) years recent RN clinical work experience in a cardiovascular/cardiothoracic/telemetry stepdown unit
• Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California
• Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
• Active American heart Association ACLS certification
• This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing
• Specialty certification in related fields

License/Certification

• Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California

• Active American heart Association ACLS certification
