IT Retail Specialist

This is a unique opportunity to provide customers with an exceptional retail experience within the Johns Hopkins-owned "Johns Hopkins Technology Store" selling Apple, Microsoft, and Dell products and accessories to Johns Hopkins faculty, staff, and students. As a Retail IT Specialist, you will be responsible for delivering an outstanding technology experience to Johns Hopkins constituents for purchasing or servicing products available either in-store or through traditional Hopkins purchasing methods. To guide customers, the incumbent will need to be well-versed in current mobile computing technologies and familiar with how these devices integrate and perform in the Hopkins computing environment.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Greet and provide service to customers, faculty, staff, and students in a friendly, respectful, and helpful manner, including assisting customers with purchase selections.
  • Process sales transactions accurately and according to established procedures.
  • Prepare merchandise displays, assist with store layout and advertising displays; organize racks and shelves to maintain the visual appeal of the store.
  • When not serving customers assist with pricing merchandise, stocking shelves, updating inventory, and helping keep an orderly stock area.
  • In cooperation with the USS IT Services leadership team maintain positive, ongoing relationships with campus contacts and continue to develop new contacts through campus outreach initiatives.
  • Assist with routine store inventory and fiscal year-end store inventory procedures.
  • Keep up-to-date on current computer/technology products industry trends by reading newsletters, and reviews, meeting with Apple representatives, completing Apple SEED training, etc.
  • Ensure the security of company assets and the safety of employees and customers.
  • Provide deliveries of products (as needed and appropriate) to customers residing on the Johns Hopkins Homewood campus.

Describe the specific devices, software, and projects for which the position is responsible

  • Complete working knowledge of Apple, Dell, and Microsoft hardware that is commonly used by Johns Hopkins students, faculty, and staff is required, including the ability to demonstrate the unique or differentiating features between models/manufacturers.
  • Working knowledge of the latest version of Apple and Microsoft operating systems, as well as several previous versions, will be required to assist customers with troubleshooting issues and selecting appropriate OS updates and upgrades.
  • Familiarity with applications and IT services commonly used by students, faculty, and staff.
  • Responsible for maintaining demonstration equipment (laptops, desktops, tablets, etc.) in retail areas, including OS/app updates, physical security devices, and occasional replacement as required.

Describe the scale/size of area, project, and/or system supported

  • The Johns Hopkins Technology Store contains approximately 1,200 sq ft of retail display, support, and demonstration area which this position will be responsible for supporting in a variety of capacities as noted above. The potential customer base includes all Johns Hopkins students, faculty, and staff within the general Homewood Campus community.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Customer service-oriented, with excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and handle multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to assign and monitor the work activities of student workers.


Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • One year of work experience in a professional environment including experience obtained through an internship or fellowship program.
  • Additional education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • At least 1 year of experience in a retail position requiring a strong customer service component.
  • One to two years of computer-related support background, with Apple product knowledge and certification preferred.
  • Experience with POS and inventory systems.
