About the College/Unit/Department
In 2018, The UGA Tifton Campus began a yearlong Centennial celebration with various events to commemorate its 100th anniversary of providing updated research to the community.
Research is done on a wide range of commodities, including cotton, peanuts, vegetables and turf grass, all of which make agriculture the No. 1 industry in Georgia.
In 2004, a teaching program was initiated and it has been growing ever since. College-level instruction on campus is aimed at undergraduate and graduate-degree level study.

This position is located in Tifton, GA, which is approximately 200 miles southwest of Athens, Georgia, 200 miles south of Atlanta, GA and approximately 70 miles north of the Florida line.

Minimum Qualifications
Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in the biological sciences, preferably in an agricultural field. Will consider a combination of education, substantial experience and training.
  • Small plot research experience, including the use of tractors, planters and harvesters is required.
  • Commercial driver's license is preferred.

Position Summary
The Research Professional conducts cultivar evaluation experiments as part of the Statewide Variety Testing team located at the Tifton Campus. This employee will utilize field maps to program GPS-enabled planters. Equipment will be transported to offsite locations, and plantings conducted with the assistance of a Research Paraprofessional. Status reports will be provided to the South Georgia Agronomist. Soil samples will be collected as needed, and provided for nematode testing. Field maintenance records will be provided to the Data Analyst at Griffin Campus prior to harvest. The employee will be responsible for harvesting experiments, and providing results and explanations of any anomalies to Data Analyst within a strict deadline to not exceed seven days.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Competent in Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word.
  • Experience with Wintersteiger planters and harvesters is preferred.
  • Crop scouting experience, knowledge of pesticide application and ability to obtain relevant license.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a larger interdisciplinary team.
  • Strong organizational skills and excellent attention to detail.
  • Willingness to seek information as needed.

Physical Demands

  • Field work involves extreme heat or cold, humidity, wind, mud, dust, pollen, and insect bites.
  • Frequent lifting of boxes or bags up to 60 lbs.
  • Climbing on and off of field equipment.
  • Exposure to dust from samples in lab.
  • Standing for hours at a time.
  • Some in-state travel.
  • Driving as needed to perform job duties.

  • Transports and operates planting and harvesting equipment, primarily at South Georgia testing locations.
  • Responsible for securing equipment on trailer for transporting.
  • Programs precision planter with GPS to achieve correct spacing for plots and seeds.
  • Ensures that weigh systems on combine are operating accurately.
  • Utilizes research combines and harvesters to generate yield data.
  • Directs the maintenance activities on equipment.
